data updated Monday March 16 6:20 pm. This includes all interviews done for the Poll
Preliminary results from all 1807 interviews
Do not quote, cite, or reference this web page
numbers and percentages will be different in the final results
Cuba Poll final results
This completes interviews for the survey. Results are weighted
to account for the fact that proportionally more interviews are being done in Broward in order
to obtain more accurate results there.
When overall results for both counties together are reported, the percentages
will accurately represent the overall opinions of Cuban-Americans in both both counties.
The overall sample for the Poll was 1,807 interviews. The
weighting procedure results in an apparent total of 1,811.
The important thing to compare is the percentages.
With 1807 interviews completed
currently the results on this page have a margin of
error of ± 2.4%, with a 95% confidence interval.
This means that as long as no major opinion-shifting event concerning Cuba occurs,
there is only a 5% chance that final percentages will be 4.4% more or less than the
percentages shown here. For example, 66.0% of respondents here
favor continuing the embargo. We can be 95% confident the the final
result will not be greater than 68.4% or less than 63.6%.
Margins of error for smaller subsamples will be larger.
Results have been weighted as discussed above to accurately estimate the opinions
of Cuban-Americans in both counties.
1201 interviews have been completed in Miami-Dade County,
with a margin of error of ± 2.9%
606 interviews have been completed in Broward County,
with a margin of error of ± 4.1%

This survey was conducted by the Institute for Public Opinion Research
and the Cuban Research Institute of Florida International University.
1,201 randomly selected Cuban-American respondents were polled in Miami-Dade
County and 606 in Broward. Interviews were completed on
March 16, 2004. The margin of error for the overall poll
is plus or minus 2.4%. This is the seventh in the series of FIU/Cuba Polls conducted since 1991. |

Intro to survey
Hello, my name is____________and I'm calling from Florida International University. We are conducting a study of the issues important to the Cuban community in South Florida. Is anyone in your HOUSEHOLD of CUBAN descent? [IF NO, GO TO DISPOSITIONS] If possible, for sampling purposes, I'm supposed to interview the youngest man 18 or older in your household. Could I do that or would you prefer that I talk to you?

This confidential call may be monitored for quality control purposes. Over the past few years, people have been talking about the possibility of political changes in Cuba. When do you think that major political changes are likely to occur in Cuba? Would you say within one year, in two-to-five years, in six-to-ten years, over ten years, or never?

51. Spanish in school: immersion or bilingual
For children who start in school and do not know how to speak English, there are two approaches. Some think that those children should start with most of their classes in Spanish, and then shift to English only when they learn it. Others think those children should start right away with almost all their classes in English. Which do you think is better: start in Spanish or start in English?

74. Congressional delegation
There are four Cuban American Representatives in the U.S. Congress. On issues dealing with Cuba they all seem to be in agreement. How good a job are they doing in representing your views on Cuba policy in Washington? A very good job, a mostly good job, a mostly bad job, or a very bad job representing your views? [INTERVIEWER, READ NAMES ONLY IF ASKED. [Bob Menendez, Iliana Ros-Lehtinen, Lincoln Diaz-Balart and Mario Diaz Balart] IF RESPONSE IS MOSTLY OR VERY BAD, ASK: What is your reason for feeling this way?]
